3a- Emergent landscapes Flashcards
what is isostatic sea level rise
changes in land level happens after glaciation as the earth’s crust rebounds so the land rises relative to the sea level due to the mass of ice sheet being removed
what is eustatic change
changes in the volume of water in the ocean store. Occurs as the climate warms so ice sheets melt and increase volume of water in oceans. steric effect- As temperatures rise thermal expansion also occurs. When temperatures are low ice sheets form and sea levels fall
how were marine terraces and abandoned cliffs formed? What geomorphic processes will be affecting it
Abandoned cliff- formed behind a raised beach or marine terrace, it would have originally been the cliff on a beach but as land levels rose it became an abandoned cliff, they often have wave cut notches and fossil sea caves
Marine terrace- shore platforms are formed and when the land level rise a marine terrace is left.
Geomorphic processes- weathering and aeolian processes will be acting on the abandoned cliff which can lead to mass movement. The waves cut notch and gravity can mean that cliff collapse will occur.
how were raised beches formed? What geomorphic processes will be affecting it
Beach formed by deposition, land level raises, beach left above seal level.
Can continue to be supplied sediment by weathering of cliff, can be eroded by storm waves may be eroded in the future if sea levels continue to rise.
