1c- sources of sediment Flashcards
Terrestrial sources of sediment
rivers can provide 90% sediment- more in steeper coastal areas and when there are floods
erosion by waves, and wind provides sediment from cliffs, when sea levels rise so will erosion and storm surges will increase erosion, weak cliffs in high energy areas provide lots of sediment
Weathering by chemicals and plants- mass movement provides sediment
human sources of sediment
beach nourishment when the sediment budget is in deficit- either by trucks or from offshore sources via a pump and tube.
offshore sources of sediment
constructive waves, tides and currents provide sediment from offshore locations and deposit it on beaches.
The wind brings sediment from sand bars, dunes and beaches elsewhere along the coast- sediment has to be finer to be carried by the wind.
