4a - Quality of Service (QoS) Flashcards
Default behavior on the network that processes traffic on a “first come, first serve” basis.
FIFO
First in, first out
Provides different priority to different applications, users, or data flows, to guarantee a certain level of performance.
QoS
Indicates a service level that enables a program to transmit data at a specified rate and to deliver it within a specified time frame.
QoS Guarantee
Goal of QoS
A guaranteed delivery system for network traffic.
The amount of time it takes for a packet to reach its destination.
Latency
A variation in delay that can seriously affect the quality of streaming audio and video.
Jitter
Networking packets that do not make it to the distant end.
Dropped packets
When a data stream may be too low for real-time multimedia services due to too many devices using the same resources.
Low Throughput
Provides high-quality quantifiable guarantees with bounded (guaranteed minimum) latency.
Guaranteed service
Provides high quality quantifiable guarantees without bounded latency.
Controlled load service
Two methods of filtering by DSCP
Port number
Deep packet inspection
Data traffic that the operator has an expectation of being delivered on time.
Sensitive traffic
Traffic that the Internet Service Provider (ISP) deems isn’t sensitive to QoS metrics.
Best effort traffic
Generally limited to the delivery of spam and traffic created by worms, botnets, and other malicious attacks.
Undesired traffic
