2a - LAN Technologies Flashcards
A layer 1 device that repeats the frame down every network cable connected to it.
Hub
A layer 2 device that can either be hardware or software based; makes filtering/forward decisions.
Bridge
Physically connects devices together on a LAN;
Classified as layer 2 devices because they also make forwarding/filtering decisions based on MAC addresses;
Can support full-duplex data transfer.
Switch
A layer 3 device that makes its forwarding (routing) decisions based on IP addresses.
Router
Standard for bridging and management;
Handles the architecture, security, management, and internetworking of LANs, MANs, and WANs.
IEEE 802.1
Standard for CSMA/CD and defining Ethernet specifications;
Specifies the physical media and working characteristics of Ethernet.
IEEE 802.3
CSMA/CD
A set of rules determining how network devices access network media. Also defines how devices should respond when two devices attempt to use a data channel simultaneously.
Carrier sense
An ongoing of activity of a data station to detect whether another station is transmitting.
Multiple access
Occurs when all machines have equal access to the wire.
When two or more devices attempt to access the same media at the same time.
Collision;
Data collides and becomes corrupted.
Collision detection
Both devices back off and wait a random amount of time before retrying.
Exponential backoff
Random wait times increase systematically to further prevent collision.
