4.9.4.6 Public and private IP addresses Flashcards
What is the difference between routable and non-routable IP addresses?
Routable addresses are globally unique and are used to connect a network to the internet.
Non-routable addresses mean that devices may have the same address as they are allocated by an ISP and are only used within a private network
Explain why the devices connected to a LAN are usually given non-routable IP addresses.
Devices are not directly connected to the Internet. So that LAN devices cannot be connected to directly computer computers outside of the LAN / on the Internet. For increased security;
Might not have enough IP addresses for each device to have a routable address;
Would be difficult to organise each device to have a unique routable IP address. Easier to allocate if the IP addresses do not have to be globally unique
