How is a subnet mask used?
A
Identifies whether an IP address in on its own network or whether it has to go through the gateway
Uses an AND gate on the IP and subnet mask to produce network ID/subnet IDs for both desktop PC and FTP server. If the result is the same as the network ID then it must be on the network.
If the first three octlets/bytes of network/subnet IDs differ the desktop computer determines that the FTP server is NOT on the same network and therefore communication must be done via the combined device.
