48 - Hypoglycemia Flashcards
hypoglycemia
insulin>glucose available in blood
<70 mg/dL
hypoglycemia causes counterregulatory sytm to be activates
> suppress insulin
production of glucagon
production of epinephrine
»>autonomic nervous systm
hypoglycemia s/s
fr epi: shaky, nervous, palpitn, diaphporesis, anxious, hunger, pallor
fr neuro bc not enough fuel to brain: difficlty speaking, visual change, stupor, confusn, coma
untreated hypo-gluc can lead to…
loss of consciousness, seizure, coma, death
causes of hypo-gluc
-mismatch in timing of food intake to peak of insulin/OA
-performing unusual or unexpected exercise
hypoglycemia tx
rule of 15
-15g of simple carb/4-6 oz of juice
-check bld gluc in 15 min
-repeat until >70mg
-2-3 doses
avoid tx with carb w fat
like candy bars, cookies, whole milk, ice cream
-fat slows down absorption of glucose
hypoglycemia acute setting tx
conscious: 20-50 mL of 50% dextrose IV
unconscious/unable to swallow: 1mg glucagon IM
GLUCAGON
stim strong hepatic response
-convern glycogen to glucose
nausea is common
-turn pt to side until alert
