fear of crime is leading to segregation of people, with wealthier people living in gated communities, and lack of jobs combined with an increase of younger people migrating to the city increases the rate of crime. greater use of open space = higher population density and more poverty, and need for homes has led to more self built housing.
What are the enviromental impacts of migration on Mexico City?
rise in car ownership is causing increased air and noise pollution and more health problems, and difficulties in supplying clean water with the growing demands.
How can growth lead to differences in quality of life between urban residents?
lack of jobs for new people coming in increases poverty, migrants moving to the city are living on garbage dumps, due to housing shortages, and squatter settlements are built on the edge of the city, and have no running water of electricity.
What are the main reasons for inequality in Mexico City?
wages - 1 in 3 workers paid less than the minimum wage, in the CBD wages are much higher, education - the poorest 10 percent average only two years of school compared to the richest who average 12 years. The services are also much better in wealthier areas - shanty town residents have no running water, electricity or food shops.
