4.6 BIODIVERSITY WITHIN A COMMUNITY Flashcards
What is the definition of biodiversity?
A range of habitats, from a local habitat to the whole earth.
What is species diversity?
The number of different species in a community.
What is genetic diversity?
The number of different species in a population.
What is ecosystem diversity?
The number of different habitats in an area.
What is species richness?
A measure of the number of different species in a community.
What does Simpson’s diversity index show?
The relationship between the number of species in a community and the number of individuals in a species.
How do farming techniques reduce biodiversity?
- Human control yields, so reduces the variety of alleles.
- Farmland is just used for one species, so reduces biodiversity.
How can you balance farming with conservation?
- Use hedgerows instead of fencing to make more habitats.
- Grow different crops, intercropping, in the same area.
- Reduce the use of herbicides & pesticides.
- Don’t drain all wetlands, preserve some of them.
