What is a hierarchical system?
A system where larger groups contain smaller groups with no overlap between groups.
What is the order that makes up the taxonomic hierarchy?
Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.
What is a species?
A group of organisms that can reproduce to make living, fertile offspring.
What are binomials?
The scientific name of a species.
What does a binomial consist of?
The organism’s genus as the first name and the organism species as the second.
Why do we use the binomial name for species?
As it is the same across the entire globe.
What is the hierarchical classification system of organisms used for?
Organise and group similar organisms together to be more easily understood.
