4.5.2 Phylogenetic Classification Flashcards
What is taxonomy?
The practice and theory of biological classification.
What is phylogeny?
The evolutionary relationship between organisms.
What does phylogenetic classification arrange species into?
Groups according to their evolutionary origins and relationships.
What does phylogeny tell us?
Who is related to whom and how closely related they are.
What is each group in phylogenetic classification classed?
A taxon (plural taxa).
What does a phylogenetic tree show?
Organisms evolved from the same ancestors.
What is the highest taxonomy rank?
Domain.
What are the 3 domains?
Bacteria (prokaryotes), Archaea (prokaryotes), and Eukarya (eukaryotes).
What is the second highest taxonomy rank?
Kingdom.
What are the 4 kingdoms of Eukaryotes?
Protoctista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.
