Q

Why are gametes haploid cells?

A

because it has half the normal number of chromosmes

When they join at fertilisation, a new cell is formed

Q

Is the cystic fibrosis gene dominant or recessive?

A

recessive

because if you inherit two copies of recessive alleles, it shows the cystic fibrosis phenotype

15
Q

What does Evolution mean?

A

The change of inherited characteristics within a population over time through natural selection, which may result in the formation of a new species

16
Q

MODEL ANSWER for evolution QER question

A

Change in the genes or mutation, led to variation within the species which meant that some RATS WERE RESISTANT TO POISON, whilst others weren’t. RATS with the mutation had the survival advantage which meant that they were more likely to survive, reproduce and pass on the gene for RESISTANCE to their offspring. Those RATS without the RESISTANT gene do not survive, eventually they may become extinct. Over time those with RESISTANCE would increase in population.

17
Q

Explain how sexual reproduction results in variation

A

DNA of games are not identical

They inherit different genes from both parents

18
Q

Give advantages to the species of variation produced by sexual reproduction

A

survival of the fittest
evolution
adaption to environment

19
Q

What does species mean?

A

organisms that reproduce together to form fertile offspring
