4.1 Classification and Biodiversity Flashcards
What are the 5 kingdoms?
animals, plants, fungi, single-celled organisms and bacteria
What is the classification order?
Dumb- Domain King- Kingdom Phillip- Phylum Came- Class Over- Order For- Family Great- Genus Spaghetti- Species
Why do organisms have scientific names as well as common names?
It’s a universal language for scientists around the world to use, to any avoid confusion
as species have different names around the world
What is an example of a non-flowering plant?
moss, ferns etc.
What factors do scientists consider when they classify organisms together?
Similarities in characteristics and DNA
What are the two types of adaptions?
morphological and behavioural adaptions
What in intraspecific competition?
competition between members of the same species
What is interspecific competition?
competition between members of different species
What do plants compete for?
water, light, minerals, space, carbon dioxide
What do animals compete for?
water, food, mates, oxygen, habitat
Other than competition, what other factors can limit the size of a population?
pollution, diseases, predation
What is the definition of biodiversity?
the variety of different species and the numbers of individuals within those species in an area
What is morphological adaptions?
structural adaptions of the organism
What is behavioural adaptions?
Things organisms do to survive
Why is biodiversity important to us?
provides us food, industrial materials, new medicines and enhances human well-being
