4.4 Training Flashcards
What is meant by the term training
A range of activities giving employees job-related skills and knowledge
Explain the benefits of training employees
- Learn new skills and gain knowledge that can make them better at their jobs
- Learn new technology required for their job
- Production of high quality goods
- Improve productivity by teaching employees to focus on important tasks
- Good customer service
Explain why training might help to improve a business’s employee retention rates
Training can make employees feel more loyal to a business giving them additional skills, which may mean they can be promoted and take on more challenging work. Both these factors mean employees are less likely to leave. Businesses can also keep more experienced staff reducing costs
Using examples, explain the difference between on-the-Job training and off-the-Job training
On the Job training means employees do not leave the workspace, with the type of training meaning that employees may learn from more experienced workers, an example of this is work shadowing where you observe experienced workers.
Off the Job training takes place outside of work, it might involve attending a course at college or university, studying at home or going on a course run by a training company which can last for a considerable amount of time. For example, an accountancy firm may pay for its employees to gain accountancy qualifications.
What is an example of on-the-job training
Shadowing more experienced workers
What is an example of off-the-job training?
Completing a computer-based training course at home
What is induction training?
The training an employee receives when they start a new job. It is designed to help the new employee settle into the business.
What does induction training include?
It can include meeting other employees, a tour of the building, IT systems, company rules and procedures. It normally takes place in the workplace
Explain the benefits of induction training
- Helps new employees to integrate with existing workers and teach them on how to carry out their new jobs effectively
- Can help new employees to become more productive earlier
Explain the benefits of on-the-job training
- On-the-job training is a cost-effective method for businesses, as it doesn’t require travel or expensive resources.
- It’s often provided by other employees, ensuring employees receive the necessary knowledge and skills for their roles.
- Allows employees to learn technology required for their job
Explain the drawbacks of on the job training
- On-the-job training may not bring new ideas to a business unless an outside trainer is used
- May result in employees being unavailable for extended periods, potentially affecting both providers and recipients
Explain the benefits of off-the-job training
- Brings new ideas and approaches into a business. This can be valuable in industries, such as developing computer software, in which change is rapid.
- Expensive and can be used to motivate employees. Receiving off-the-job training can make employees feel valued as their employer is spending significant sums on improving their skills. This may result in substantial improvements in the employee’s performance at work
Explain the drawbacks of off-the-job training
- Can be expensive and risky for small businesses, as it may not be feasible for them to afford
- The training may lead to employees leaving the business for new opportunities, resulting in little or no return on investment
