Why is training important?
It increases motivation. This may increase employee retention
It may lead to higher quality products
Could lead to better customer service which may lead to better word of mouth advertisement which means that a business can save money on marketing
It may lead to increased production…
It may lead to less mistakes being made
What is induction training?
Training which is done when you start a job. This teaches you things about a business eg where the toilets are … there role in the business
What are the advantages of induction training?
Helps integrate new employees into a business. An employee will be more effective if they know what they are doing earlier
Normally increases staff retention because they feel like the fit in
What is on the job training?
When you are training whilst working
Eg
Work shadowing (an experienced employees watches you work and give you tips)
Formal training sessions
Computer based training
What are the advantages of on the job training?
It is cheep, this means that they can do this for more employees / for longer
It targets the exact needs of the business. It teaches employees how to that exact job efficiently
E learning teaches employees how to use programs which the business uses
What is e learning
When you are taught by a computer program
What are the disadvantages of on the job training?
Unlikely to bring new ideas into the business
Whilst being training the employee may not be able to work as effectively /at all
What is off the job training?
Training which is done by the employee not at there place of work
This is normally payed by or partly payed by the business
What are the benefits of off the job training?
Help bring new ideas into the business
May motivate an employee is they feel like they are being valued
May increase staff retention and increases employee loyalty
What are the disadvantages of off the job training?
Can be expensive
There is a possibility that after the training the employee may leave and join a competitor because they are now more qualified. This would mean that the business has gained nothing/very little
What factors might influcence a business to train it’s employees or not to?
It’s financial position
The amount of skill he job needs
How much profit it is making at the moment
It’s objectives and aims
When might you use each training?
Induction training - when there is a new employee working
On the job training - for a low skilled job eg MacDonalds
Off the job training - to train for more high skilled tasks
Why might it be hard for a business to train it’s employees?
It may not be affordable
There may be to many employees to train
