What are the 2 ways of motivation, give examples for each?
Financial methods
Commission, profit sharing, increasing wages,piecwork
Non financial methods
Fringe benefits, training,
What is piecework?
What is commission?
Piecework is when an employee gets payed depending on how many products they make
Commission is when they get a share of anything they sell (usually used in real estate)
What is job enrichment?
When you give employees more challenging tasks
What is job rotation?
When you move between jobs of similar difficulty or responsibility
What is job enlargement?
When you give employees more tasks to complete
What are some fringe benefits?
Free food
Company car
Free gym membership
Free health insurance
What is the difference between wage and salary
A wage is payed at an hourly rate whilst a salary is payed at a weekly/ month rate
Some employees get board of there job and become less motivated. How do business try and stop this?
Job rotation
Job enrichment
Job enlargement
(Last 2 may increase self esteem needs)
What are the advantages and disadvantages of piecework and commission?
Advantages
It encourages employees to make more sales
May lead to higher sales and may lead to more profit
DISADVANTAGES
May lead to employees rushing work and this may decrease quality which will make you loose money.
What are the benefits of a more motivated employee?
They are normally more productive which may lead to a lower unit cost and this may lead to more profits
Staff retention may be higher - if employees are more motivated they are more likely to want to go to work. This decreases the amount of money the business needs to spend on recruitment and it removes the need to train new employees.
May have higher sales because customer service is likely to be better.
There will be more word of mouth marketing which may mean that they business can spend less on marketing
You get a good reputation and therefore it is easier to find new employees and you need to spend less to find them.
What are the levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?
Explain each level
Bottom - Top
Physical needs (basic needs)
This includes things like a decent salary/wage and decent working conditions.
Safety
A employee needs to feel safe at work. This could mean having fire alarms, no sharp objects. Employees will need job security
Social needs
People need facility’s to socialise in Eg a staff room for teachers, team building exercises
Esteem needs
This includes things such as regular Praise and feedback, recognition of hard work (employee of the month) or promotions, bonuses.
This could also include More training
Self actualisation
Having independence to make your own decision, having equal opportunity for promotion, there being no discrimination. Having an environment where you can reach your full potential
