4.3 Study Guide Flashcards
What type of atoms can be ionic or covalent bonding.
Only nonmetals can be either ionic or covalent.
What are Covalent bonds?
They are the atoms that are not really sharing as much as they are fighting over them.
Ionic bonds?
When oppsite ions are attracted to eachother like negative and positive.
What is the difference between non-polar and polar covalent bonds?
Non-polar is the equally sharing of electrons between two atoms while polar covalent is unequally sharing of electrons between two atoms.
What is Electronegativity?
It is the measure of how strongly atome attract new bonding electrons to themselves.
What is the octet rule?
Atoms will prefer to have eight electrons in the valence shell
Explain how electronegativity determines what type of bond two atoms will form.
It will show the measure of polarity and the type of bond it will have.
