3.2 Study Guide Flashcards
What does heterotroph mean?
It means organsims getting their energy from other organisms.
What is shown in a pyramaid of biomass?
it shows the flow of energy between producers and consumers.
True or False: It goes….
Producer –> primary consumer –> secondary consumer –> teritary consumer
True.
Are the primary consumers usally herbivores?
Usually yes becuase the they mostly only eat the producers that are clearly not meat.
What is the difference between a direct and indirect effect in a trophic casacade.
Direct effects is changes in the enviorment which cna be negative or positive while indirect is changes of a species’ predators, compititors, or prey.
What is the rule of 10 and how does it apply to ecological pyramid models?
The rule of 10 is that as the enargy is passed in an ecosystem only 10 percent will be passed on.
Why is it considered more efficient to eat at a lower trophic level vs. a higher trophic level?
It is becuase energy is lost in the transfer from one level to the next, there is successively less total energy as you move up trophic levels.
