Spiritless can be opened and close by sphincters(preventing water loss) and oxygen diffuses through the spiracles down the trachea lined with chitin (preventing collapse - impermeable no gas can diffuse) oxygen diffuses into small tubes called tracheoles where gas exchange occurs where oxygen can diffuse into the tissue fluid and diffuse into respiring cells.
