4.2 Uplands And Lowlands Flashcards
What weathering processes affect the upland?
The upland is affected by freeze thaw weathering and rapid slope processes such as landslides and rockfalls.
What weathering processes affect the lowland?
The lowland is affected by chemical weathering and biological weathering.
What post glacial river processes affect the upland?
The upland is affected by rivers which flow in the bottoms of U-shaped valleys rather than glaciers? The rivers are known as misfits due to their small size compared to the valley. They deposit silt and mud which makes the valley bottoms fertile for farming.
What post glacial river processes affect the lowlands?
The lowland is affected by dry valleys which is caused by water seeping through the chalk into the ground, this leaves a valley where a river used to be.
What slope processes affect the lowland?
Soil creep affects the lowland. It is caused by rain dislodging soil particles and it is when soil slowly slips down the landscape which has the ability to move trees, it moves extremely slowly.
What distinctive landscapes are caused by human processes in the upland?
- dispersed settlement patterns
- stone walls as field boundaries
- afforestation
What distinctive landscapes are caused by human processes in the lowland?
- large villages found around farms
- rivers and irrigation channels act as field boundaries
- fertile land used for farming
What is scarp and bale topography?
- Sedimentary rock layered down- chalk, greens and, clay
- Tectonic processes fold/fault= anticline
- Different rates of erosion, chalk (top) erodes first, this creates a steep scarp
- A dip slope is shallow as has had less erosion while a scarp is steep and has had more erosion
What is the general shape of the landscape in the upland?
The upland generally has a rough landscape and also has v shaped valleys.
What is the landscape of the lowland?
The lowland is flat and even single glacial rivers got to it.
What is the relic of the Lake District?
The Lake District has a lot of hilly areas and high areas of land.
