4.1.3 Alkene reactions Flashcards
Name 4 reactions alkenes can go through
hydrogenation
halgenation
addition of hydrogen halides
hydration
what test can you do to test for an alkene
Alkene + bromine water
if colourless-> C=C present
stays orange/brown -> C=C not present
as bromine water is orange/brown
why are alkenes more reactive then alkanes
due to pi bond
this causes e- density above and below the sigma bond so it can break easily and form additional reactions
what is hydrogenation
explain via using propene and what conditions are needed (2)were e
makes alkenes -> alkanes
propene + H2 -> propane
passes over nickel catalyst
423K
what happens at halogenation explain using propene and the condition needed (1)
alkene + halogen -> haloalkane
Propene + cl2/ br2/ I2 -> yah you know what just draw it out
room temp
what happend when a hydrogen halide is added to an alkene and what is the 2 conditions also use propene + HCl to show it
alkene + hydrogen halide -> haloalkane
room temp
if gas just mix but if liquid then need to bubble HCL through
Propene + HCl -> just draw
what is formed in hydration
conditions needed
alchol is formed as u use H2O so it breaks up into H and OH and attaches to the alkene
the h2o needs to be as a gas so steam
and needed phosphoric acid catalyst ( H2PO4)
