4.1 Origin of Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Origin of Olfactory Nerve
Does not join with brainstem. Olfactory mucosa (roof of nasal cavity)
Origin of Optic Nerve
Retina of the eye
Origin of Occulomotor Nerve for motor fibres and autonomic fibres
Occulomotor ncleus (motor) Edinger-Westphal nucleus (autonomic) Anterior aspect of midbrain
Origin of Trochlear nerve
Trochlear nucleus
Posterior aspect of midbrain
Origin of trigeminal nerve for motor and sensory components.
Sensory:
Mesencephalic, principal sensory and spinal nuclei of trigeminal nerve (Sensory).
Motor nucleus of trigeminal nerve (Motor).
Extending from midbrain to medulla.
Origin of abducens nerve
Abducens nucleus in pons
Origin of facial nerve
Motor: Facial motor nerve nucleus in pons
Sensory: Nucleus solitarius in pons
Autonomic: Superior salivatory nucleus
Origin of vestibulocochlear nerve
Vestibular component: Vestibular nuclei complex in medulla and pons
Cochlear componeny: Ventral and dorsal cochlear nuclei situated in the inferior cerebellar peduncle.
Origin of glossopharygeal nerve
Medulla oblongata of the brain
Origin of vagus nerve
Medulla of the brainstem
Origin of spinal accessory nerve
Neurones of upper spinal cord, C1-C5
Origin of hypoglossal nerve
Arises from the hypoglossal nucleus in the medulla oblongata.
