Q

Define ‘cellular metabolism’

A

Cellular metabolism is the sum of all the chemical reactions taking place in all living cells. It consists of two major types of reactions; catabolic reactions and anabolic reactions

Q

What happens in anabolic reactions?

A

In anabolic reactions, atoms and simple molecules are joined to make more complex molecules. Anabolic reactions require an initial input of energy (endergonic reactions) so they can start to form new chemical bonds.

Q

Give an example of an anabolic reaction

A

Photosynthesis is a anabolic reaction in which the simple inorganic molecules water and carbon dioxide react to complex organic molecule glucose.
