4. Psychometrics, traits and types Flashcards
define psychometrics
the field of study concerned with the theory and technique of psychological measurement
what is classical test theory
assumes that each person has a true score, T, that would be obtained if there were no errors in measurement
:. although error is an inherent part of measurement
what can be responsible for error
misunderstandings, distractions, moods, time pressure
define reliability
how consistent and dependable the measure is
what is test-retest reliability
does the same measurement give us the same result each ime
what is internal consistency
are these different measures reflecting the same underlying thing
what is inter-rater reliability
is there agreement in measurement
define validity
does this actually measure what its supposed to measure
name three types of validity
face validity. ecological validity. predictive validity
describe face validity
how much does it appear to be a legitimate measure at face value
what is the great trait debate
should personality best be understood as types or dimensions
how would u describe the types aspect of the great trait debate
person centred- the person is “either/or” there is no middleground
how would u describe dimensional personality traits
traits are on a continuous spectrum, for example levels of extraversion
what do studies find in the great trait debate
dimensional personality traits are more accurate- greater stability and better at predicting outcomes, defining a person by a few extremes is not always useful
