4: natural selection and evolution Flashcards
what is evolution?
the slow and continuous change of organisms from one generation to the next
what is natural selection?
the process of survival and adaptation/change in a population of species due to pressures from the their environment
how does natural selection occour?
individuals with better adapted characteristics to the pressures in their environment have a better chance at survival and reproducing
what is a fossil?
any trace of an animal or plant that lived a long time ago that are most commonly found in rocks
how are fossils useful to prove evolution?
by arranging fossils in chronological order, gradual changes in organisms can be seen
what is classification?
sorting living organisms into groups
why is classification important?
provides useful information about organisms evolutionary history and which other organisms are related to it
what are the five kingdom classification sectors?
animals
plants
fungi
prokayotes
protists
what is genetic engineering?
genetically modifying an organism to be adapted to their environment
