4) Natural Causes Of Climate Change Flashcards
1
Q
Discuss volcanoes as a cause of climate change (5)
A
- An active volcano produces large amounts of sulfur when it erupts.
-It also produces gases like:
•carbon dioxide
•sulfur oxide
•hydrogen chloride
•and hydrogen fluoride
2
Q
Discusse moving continent as a cause of climate change (5)
A
- Continents can move over long periods of time
- and affect our climate.
- It is believed that 3 million years ago that North America and South America were separate massive.
- They clashed and the snake piece of land was formed.
- This is known as Isthmus of Panama, and had a huge impact on our climate
3
Q
Discuss Isthmus of Panama (4)
A
- Before Isthmus of Panama, the warm pacific ocean and the cold Atlantic ocean flown into each other.
- Once South America North America clash, this was no longer possible.
- The warm Caribbean flowed into the Atlantic and up towards Europe.
- The warm water caused Europe to become warmer
4
Q
What is the earths axis? (2)
A
- Imagine a rod is put through the Earth from the north to south pole.
- This road is known as the earths axis
5
Q
Discuss the earths rotation around it self (3)
A
- Every 24 hours the Earth spins around it self once.
- When it’s facing the Sun it today. - When it’s facing away from the Sun it’s dark and night
6
Q
Discuss the earths orbit around the sun (5)
A
- Earth also moves around the sun. -One year equals one orbit around the sun.
- The earths axis is tilted 23, 5°.
- It doesn’t move in a circular motion, it moves in and egg shaped path.
- Sometimes it’s closer to the Sun and sometimes it’s further away
7
Q
What is the sun? (1)
A
A big ball of fire
8
Q
How do we experience seasons (2)
A
- Because the Earth moves in an egg-shaped way, we experience seasons
- It’s hotter certain time a year when we’re closer to the sun
9
Q
Discuss the fact that we are moving closer to the sun (4)
A
- Over millions of years, the orbit around the sun has changed
- We move closer and futher away
- In the last 100 years we have moved closer
- because the temperatures are rising
10
Q
What is a supernova? (1)
A
It’s an explosion in space cauesed by the collaps of the core of a massive star
11
Q
How do supernovas effect our climate in theory (4)
A
- some scientists believe the climate is changing because of supernovas in nearby galaxies
- the energy can light a whole galaxy before disappearing
- some scientists believe the energy can travel as far as earth
- it enters the atmosphere, creates clouds and adds to the greenhouse effect
