5) Human Causes To Climate Change Flashcards
1
Q
How does CO2 effect the climate (2)
A
- CO2/carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas
- It traps the sun’s heat, causing global warming
2
Q
How is CO2 prodused (2)
A
- CO2 is produced when fossil fuels (coal) is burned
- Also when oil, petrol and natural gass is burned
3
Q
How are fossil fuels formed? (5)
A
- Form of energy from millions of years ago
- It’s made from plants and animal matter
- When the animal/plant dies it becomes matter under the earths layers
- It forms into rocks when it’s crushed under the layers
- It becomes a fossil fuel, then we’d dig them up and use it as an energy source
4
Q
Discuss wood as a reason for climate change (3)
A
- Wood isn’t a fossil fule, yet it’s often used as a fuel source
- It produces lower levels of harmful sulphates
- Although it still produces high levels of CO2
5
Q
What is deforestation? (2)
A
- Large forests are destroyed to keep up with tge wood supplies
- as the trees are cut down they aren’t replaced
6
Q
What is the open land because of deforestasion used for (
A
- Agriculture
- Farming
- New offices
- New homes
- this encourages more deforestation
- slowly our forests vanish and are replaced with towns and cities
7
Q
Why are plants and trees vital for the environment (1) and what happens when they are destroyed (2)
A
-Plants soaks up CO2 and changes it into oxygen for us to breath in
- As forests are destroyed, less CO2 is obsorbed and taken out of the air
- Therefore the CO2 finds its way into to atmosphere
8
Q
How is rainfall decreased (2)
A
- Rainforest are being cut down, decreasing rainfall
- That makes it harder for plants to grow
9
Q
At what rate are rainforests destroyed (1)
A
Everyday a rainforest the size of Tokyo is destroyed
