2) Melting Ice Flashcards
1
Q
What major concern arises with climate change? (1)
A
The melting of ice glaciers
2
Q
What are glaciers? (3)
A
- Glaciers are huge areas covered in ice
- There are 2 types of glaciers:
• Alpine glaciers
• Continental glaciers
3
Q
Define continental glaciers (2)
A
- They cover huge areas
- They’re found in polar regions
4
Q
Discuss alpine glaciers (5)
A
- They’re high up in mountains
• Where the air is cooler - In the summer they melt a little, creating steam
- They melting also causes higher sea levels
- In winter they freeze again
6
Q
The ice in ________ + Antarctica is melting fast. This bad news for _____ in the cooler areas. (2)
A
- Arctic
- animals
7
Q
Discuss climate change affecting polar bears (4)
A
- Polar bears feed on seal while making use of floating ice
- As the ice melts, the drifting ice gets smaller
- Therefore the bears need to swim futher
- Many bears get exaused and die because of starvation and drowning
8
Q
Explain how climate change affects tge snow (5)
A
- The more water there is, the more snow there will be
- The more water released by glaciers, the more water is obsorbed by the atmosphere
- Thefore, the is more snow available to fall in cold areas e.g. Siberia
- The wild animalsin the area will have difficulties grazing in heavy snow
- as the prey dies, so do the predators
9
Q
How does climate change effect migrating animals (2)
A
- Animals that migrate to cooler areas are in danger
- Climate change is making cool areas warmer and unsuitable for living
11
Q
How does climate change effect the glaciers? (5)
A
- As the temperatures rise, the glaciers melt faster
- Alphine glaciers often flood fields + villages on lower land
- Winters are also warmer, so they don’t freeze again
- Glaciers become smaller each year
- Once they’re completely melted, there will be no water source for animals + plants that depend on it
