4 Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis (define)
Maintenance of near constant condition in an internal environment
What is a negative feedback mechanism
The output response reversed the stimulus and restores parameter towards set norm
What is the positive feedback mechanism
The output response enhances or amplified stimulus
What is the pathway for homeostasis
1) stimulus
2) receptor (sensor)
3) control centre
4) effector
5) response
Describe the thermoregulation process
Stimulus: the condition deviates from set point
Receptor: thermorecepters in skin detect change in body temperature and sends nerve impulses to control center
Control center: brain responds to change in body temp by sending nerve impulse
Effectors: to affect its at different parts of the body, carrying out responses
If body temp below:
Vasoconstriction, hair raised, shivering, increased metabolic rate
If body temp above:
Vasodilation, sweat glands, decreased metabolic rate, increased heart rate
Response restores/reverses stimuli to normal range by negative feedback
