Act of Homage
A vassel would kneel to show their loyalty.
Castellans
People who looked after the Royal castles and forests. May be performed by the sheriff or the local Lord.
Ecclesiastical
Off or relating to the church.
Freemen
A tenant worker who was free and paid rent for their land – rather than giving service. They could move on to other villages or towns if they wanted.
Hundreds
What shires were split into.
Lord of the Manor
The owner of the Manor house and the land in the village (and possibly surrounding areas).
Marcher lords
The border regions of England were known as the matches. The Lords who controlled them.
Manor
The area of land controlled by a Lord – the Lord of the Manor.
Service
Done in return for land, not paying, doing jobs.
SheriffTasks?
Sheriffs were a barons deputy. Tasks: making annual payments to the King, collecting tax and raising armies.
Shires
The origin of the word sheriff.
Tenants
A person who occupies land or property owned by another.
Oath of Fealty
A promise to be faithful to the Lord and serve him, this was a religious act.
