4. Chemical bonding Flashcards
What is a noble gas?
A noble gas has full valence electron shell therefore they are chemically unreactive
What happens to an atom do not have full valence shells?
They can complete their valence shell through loss electrons, gain of electrons or sharing electrons
What are cations?
A cations is a positive ion they have more protons than electrons and have a net positive charge
What are anions?
Anions are negative ions that have a net negative charge and usually have a noble gas electronic configuration
The ionic bond
An ionic bond is the mutual electrostatic attraction between ions of opposite charge
Ionic compounds
An ionic compound is a neutral substance made up of ions of opposite charges. These ions are held together by ionic bonds
Ionic structure
An ionic compound forms a structure called a giant ionic crystal lattice
What is valency?
Valency refers to the number of electron(s) that must be lost, gained, or shared in order for the atom to attain a noble gas electronic configuration
Covalent molecules
A covalent molecule can be made from atoms of the same or different elements
What are covalent molecules?
Covalent molecules are simple molecules. They have a countable number of atoms in a fixed ratio.
