Geopolitics
the study of the effects of geography on politics and relations among states.
Authoritarian
govt. with a strong central power, no constitutional accountability, and less individual freedoms
Republic
govt where power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected representatives responsible to them and governing according to law
Democracy
govt where power resides with the majority
Shatterbelts
region that suffers instability or is at risk of instability because it is located between two regions or opposing powers (US vs. USSR)
Velvet Divorce
was the unofficial name given to the separation of Czechoslovakia into Slovakia and the Czech Republic in the early 1990
Balkinization
fragmentation of a state or region into smaller, often hostile, units along ethno-linguistic lines.
Choke points
geographic feature (sea or land), that has significant strategic importance.
Territoriality
willingness by a person or group of people to defend space they claim.
