State
political unit with a permanent population and boundaries that are recognized by other states
Sovereignty
the authority of a state to govern itself or another state
Nation
a community of people bound to a homeland and possessing a common identity based on shared cultural traits such as language, ethnicity, and religion.
Nation-state
a state with a single nation (very few exist today)
Stateless nation
an ethnic group or nation that does not have its own state and is not the majority population in any nation-state.
Multinational state
a country containing multiple national, ethnic, and religious groups within its boundaries (most states)
Multistate nation
a nation living across multiple states/countries
Autonomous region
an area which governs itself but is not an independent country
Semi-autonomous region
an aea which can govern itself in certain areas, but does not have complete power to govern
Multiethnic state
a state that contains more than one ethnicity
Apartheid
Laws (no longer in effect) in South Africa that physically separated different races into different geographic areas.
Elongated State
a state whose territory is long and narrow in shape (Vietnam, Chile)
Compact State
state that is reasonably small and centralized; it usually somewhat resembles a square. (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda)
Prorupted state
state that has a primary body of territory that comprises most of the state, but that also has a long extension that can dramatically increase the territorial power and significance of the country. (Thailand)
Perforated state
state that completely surrounds another state (Italy,-completely surrounds the Vatican, South Africa-completely surrounds Lesotho)
