  • pH paper (nitrazine) or ferning
  • observe cervical dilation and length
  • cervical cultures
  • amniotic fluid for pulmonary maturation tests
  • pooling of fluid can be seen
  • valsalva or fundal pressure can cause fluid to exit the os
