3.Genes and dorsal cell fate Flashcards
Egg Polarity Genes
Genes that establish the dorsal-ventral and anterior-posterior axes during egg development, such as gurken and torpedo.
Gurken Gene
A Drosophila gene encoding the GRK protein, which signals via the TORPEDO receptor to establish dorsal follicle cell identity.
Torpedo Gene
Encodes the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) in Drosophila, important for specifying cell fate via signal transduction
Complementation Test
A genetic method to determine if two mutations affect the same gene or different genes based on their ability to restore a wild-type phenotype.
Chimera
An organism composed of cells derived from different zygotes, used experimentally to study gene function.

Signal Transduction Cascade
A series of molecular interactions initiated by ligand-receptor binding, resulting in cellular responses.
e.g between glatze protein- toll receptor
Oncogene
A mutated proto-oncogene that promotes uncontrolled cell division and tumor formation.
Tumor Suppressor Genes
Genes that inhibit cell division; loss of their function can lead to cancer.
Proto-Oncogene
A normal gene that facilitates cell proliferation but can become an oncogene through mutation.
FLT3 Gene
A proto-oncogene whose mutations are implicated in acute myelogenous leukemia, leading to unregulated cell division.
