is used when a negative result occurs due to choosing between one of two things to be done. the preceding clause and the following clause refer to the same.
Vst-느라고
In the clause following ‘-느라고’ there is a verb or an adjective describing a negative result of the preceding clause. Usually when verbs are used in the following clause, the ending is a negative form such as ‘-지 못하다’, ‘-지 않다’, etc. When adjectives are used they have negative connotations such as ‘바쁘다’, ‘정신이 없다’, etc. ‘-느라고’ is frequently used when giving an excuse about what the person had to do but couldn’t. The subject of the preceding clause and the following clause is the same. Tense is expressed in the following. The verbs that are used with ‘-느라고’ must refer to an activity that continues over a period of time (자다, 공부하다, etc.) ‘-느라고’ can be combined with neither actions in which the speaker’s intention is absent such as ‘감기에 걸리다’ or ‘기침이 나다’ nor momentary actions such as ‘넘어지다’, ‘일어나다’, ‘알다’, ‘모르다’, etc.
is used when expressing a realization that what one thought is different from the fact. It is frequently used in speaking.
Vst-은/는 줄 알았다, regardless of the tense ‘알았다’ is always used.
