3.a Water extraction, Combustion, Sequestration Flashcards
1
Q
what is water extraction
A
removal of water rom surface and ground water stores to meet public demand
2
Q
water table
A
extraction > recharge = reduced water table
- fluctuates seasonally
3
Q
aquifers
A
- permeable or porous water bearing rocks
water is extracted from aquifers to meet public supply by wells
4
Q
artisan basin
A
- when they are tapped they will flow water to the surface under its own pressure (artisan pressure)
- e.g London
5
Q
extraction
A
- if rates of extraction exceed recharge rates (rainfall) then can lead to water scarcity
6
Q
combustion
A
- fossil fuels
- dependant on fossil fuels even after discovery of nuclear energy
- releases 1o billion tonnes of co2 into atmosphere annually
7
Q
carbon sequestration
A
- carbon, capture and storage
- co2 is compressed and transported by pipeline to storage areas
- then injected into porous rocks
- large costs and energy amounts .
- requires specific geological needs for storage
