1.c Processes of water cycle Flashcards
1
Q
precipitation
A
- water and ice fall from clouds (rain)
- when vapour in atmosphere reaches its dew point forms clouds
- falls into catchment areas and enters rivers and oceans
2
Q
transpiration
A
- diffusion of water vapour into the atmosphere from leaves and plants
- influenced by wind and temps
3
Q
evapouration
A
- liquid water into water vapour
- main way water enters the atmosphere
- heat is required (solar radiation)
4
Q
condenstation
A
- vapour into liquid water
- when water is cooled at is dew point
- forms clouds ( cumuliform, stratiform, cirrus)
- form due to warm air rising and cooling and condensing (RCCR)
5
Q
interception
A
- veg intercepts a proportion of precipitation
- stored on branches and leaves before dripping into soil (throughflow)
-flow along branches is called stemflow
6
Q
infiltration
A
- from the ground into the soil or into river channels
7
Q
perculation
A
- water that flows into deep underground rocks
8
Q
ablation
A
- loss of snow and ice due to melting , evaporation and sublimation
9
Q
cumuliform clouds
A
- flat bases
considerable vertical development
10
Q
stratiform clouds
A
- layer clouds
- air masses are moving horizontally across cooler surface
11
Q
cirrus clouds
A
- wispy
- form at high altitude
- little influence on water cycle
