3A. Forgiving roadside concepts Flashcards
(e.g., clear zone, recoverable slopes, roadside obstacles)
Estimating Speed of Vehicle from Skid Marks
P.E. Handbook 5.1.4.3
db =((v1)^2-(v2)^2) / (30 (f +-G))
db=horizontal distance traveled (ft) in reducing speed of vehicle from v1 to v2 during braking maneuvers
v1=vehicle speed when brakes are applied (initial speed) (mph)
v2 = vehicle speed at end of travel (final speed) (mph)
f=a/g = coefficient of friction (unitless) between tires and road pavement
a= deceleration of vehicle when brakes are applied (ft/sec2)
g= acceleration due to gravity (32.2ft/sec2)
G= grade of roadway (decimal form; negative if downhill)
What slopes are consider recoverable?
1V:4H or flatter
What slopes are consider non-recoverable?
Between 1V:3H and 1V:4H
What slopes are consider critical?
Steeper than 1V:3H
What is the recommend clear zone for AASHTO “Green Book”?
7 to 10 ft
What is the design clear zone a function of?
Design speed, side slope, and traffic volume
Per the Green Book what is the minimum lateral offset from a curved road? At the intersection?
1.5 ft, 3 ft
