Q

Estimating Speed of Vehicle from Skid Marks

A

P.E. Handbook 5.1.4.3

db =((v1)^2-(v2)^2) / (30 (f +-G))

db=horizontal distance traveled (ft) in reducing speed of vehicle from v1 to v2 during braking maneuvers
v1=vehicle speed when brakes are applied (initial speed) (mph)
v2 = vehicle speed at end of travel (final speed) (mph)
f=a/g = coefficient of friction (unitless) between tires and road pavement
a= deceleration of vehicle when brakes are applied (ft/sec2)
g= acceleration due to gravity (32.2ft/sec2)
G= grade of roadway (decimal form; negative if downhill)
