Q

How to calculate pedestrian flow rate
(Step 2 in calculating LOS for pedestrian walkways)

A

Similar to Peak Hour Factor
Vp = V15 / (15 x We)

Vp = pedestrain unity flow rate (p/min/ft)
V15 = Pedestrain flow rate during peak 15 min (p/hr)
We = Effective walkway width (ft)

Q

How to calculate Calculate Average Pedestrian Space
(Step 3 in calculating LOS for pedestrian walkways)

A

Ap = Sp / Vp

Ap = Pedestrian space (ft^2/p)
Sp = Pedestrian speed (ft/min - HCM 19-81)
Vp = Pedestrian flow per unit width (ped/ft/min - step 2)

note - Often the question will give you ft/s and Sp is in ft/ min

Q

How to Determine Effective Walkway Width (We)?
(Step 1 in calculating LOS for pedestrian walkways)

A

We = Wt - Wo

We = Effective walkway width (ft)
Wt = Total Walkway width (ft)
Wo = Sum of fixed-object effective width (HCM exhibit 24-9)
