3.7 Power Supply Units (PSU) Flashcards
Summarize power supply types and features.
Explain the difference between input 115v and 220v.
115v (volt) is the standard AC current used in north america. 220v is used in the rest of the world. Power supplies come with a switch in the back that allows you to switch between the two types of volts allowing you to use the computer in different countries.
Explain the difference between output 5v and 12v.
The 12v current is used to power motors on devices such as hard drives and optical drives, and the 5v current is used for support of onboard electronics.
What do you use to supply power to the mother board?
Moder motherboards use a 20 or 24 pin P1 power connector.
What is a wattage rating?
The wattage rating is listed on the power supply unit (PSU) and tells you the maximum wattage output. A good way to determine what you need is to add up the total wattage of every component in your PC.
