Given a scenario, connect and configure accessories and ports of other mobile devices.
What connector do most Android devices use?
Micro OR Mini USB.
What is the connector used by Apple?
Lightning Connector. (8 pin and reversible).
What is a Proprietary Vendor-Specific Port or connector?
A connector or port designed by a company for use ONLY on their devices. The poster child for this type of connection is the Lightning connector designed by Apple.
What is USB type C?
Like the Lightning connector, the USB Type-C connector is not keyed, allowing it to be inserted right-side up or upside down. It can (but doesn’t have to) support USB 3.1 technology with very fast data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbps.
Explain what Bluetooth is.
You can pair a Bluetooth device with a mobile device
using a simple process that begins with enabling Bluetooth on the mobile device (if it isn’t already enabled). Steps vary, but you can accomplish this in
the quick settings menu or the full device settings menu.
Not all Bluetooth pairings require a PIN code, but there’s always some kind of pairing action to perform on both devices.
Explain what NFC is. What does NFC stand for?
NFC = Near Field Communication.
NFC) uses chips embedded in mobile devices that create electromagnetic fields when these devices are close to each other. The typical range for NFC communications is anywhere from a very few
centimetres to only a few inches. The devices must be very close to or touching each other, and can be used to exchange contact information, small files, and even payment transactions through stored credit cards using
systems like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Explain magnetic readers and chip readers.
Merchants can attach a magnetic reader or a chip reader to a smartphone to enable very quick credit card transactions via the cellular network.
What is IR and what does IR stand for?
IR = Infrared.
(IR) was previously used to transfer data between
mobile devices, such as laptops and some older PDAs. Infrared was used to create the first real personal area networks (PANs). Infrared uses the wireless Infrared Data Association (IrDA) standard, and at one time was widely used to connect devices such as wireless remotes, printers, wireless mice, digitizers, and other serial devices. IrDA requires line of sight, meaning that
devices have to be directly facing each other, requires very short distances (sometimes inches) between devices, and has very slow data rates.
Explain what a hot spot is.
A mobile hotspot is a small device that shares access to cellular technologies such as 3G, 4G, and 4G LTE via Wi-Fi. Most of these devices can be purchased from wireless providers such as Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, or other carriers, and are usually specific to their type of broadband network. A mobile hotspot is basically a wireless router that routes traffic between Wi-Fi devices and broadband technologies, providing wireless access for up to five to ten devices at a time.
Explain what tethering is.
Cell phones and tablets can act as portable hot spots. When used in this manner, it is called tethering.
What are some common mobile accessories?
Game controllers, headsets, speakers, battery packs/chargers, cases and screen protectors, waterproofing, credit card readers, micro SD cards.
What is Qi?
Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the wireless charging standard of choice.
