What is employment law?
Laws designed to protect workers from employers who may treat them unfairly.
What is discrimination?
When one worker is treated differently to another for no acceptable reasons. This could be due to their gender or race.
What is the Working time directive?
A statement of the maximum number of hours that a person can be asked to work (unless they opt out)
What is meant by holiday entitlement?
The amount of paid holiday (time off work) that a worker can have in a year.
What is an employment tribunal?
A panel that hears cases where employment laws may have been broken. They come to a decision either in favour of the employer or employee.
What is a trade union?
An employee organisation that exists to represent the interests of its workers.
What is a contract of employment?
A legal agreement between an employer and an employee concerning the pay, conditions, holidays etc.
On what grounds may employees find themselves discriminated against?
Disability Ethnicity Gender Religion Sexual orientation
What is the name of the act that protects employees from discrimination?
The Equality Act 2010
