An act introduced to protect the the rights of employees and advance equality opportunities for all

What are the advantages of complying with the law?
•a company with a more diverse workforce may recieve a range of different ideas from people with different experiences and backgrounds which may help improve quality
•workers will feel more motivated to work and see the business as a good employer increasing efficency
•increases business reputation so easier to recruit workers
What are the costs associated with complying with the law?
•wage costs- firms may have to employ more people than they want to e.g. when a worker is on holiday or when there is a limit to work hours
•Court costs and fines- if an employee takes legal action a company may have to pay for a lawyer and may have to pay compensation.
• publicty costs- if taken to court the business the businesss may lose a good reputation
What is the maximum number of hours an employee can work?
48 hours a week (this is averaged out over a 17 week period)
How many holidays are workers entitled to?
•5.6 weeks a year including Bank holidays
What is a contract of employment?
•a legal agreement between an employer and employee
•law states a business must give every worker a statement of employment
What should a statement of employment include?
•pay
•holiday entitlement
