What is selection?
the process of choosing between applicants for a job
what is a job description?
links the main duties, tasks and responsibilities of a worker
what is a person specification?
lists the qualities, qualifications and knowledge a person should have
what is internal recruitment ?
when a job is filled by someone who already works in the organisation
what are advantages of internal recruitment?
•cheaper to advertise than externally
•quicker to recruit
•the person knows the business so money may not need to spent on induction training
•good for morale to offer promotions
what are disadvantages of internal recruitment?
•existing staff may not have new ideas to help the business improve
•limited choice as there may not be many people who are willing and able to apply
•promotion can cause resentment and jealousy
•backfilling leads to time/money being spent on further recruitment
what is external recruitment?
when an organisation fills up a position with someone else outside of the organisation
what are the advantages of external recruitment?
•good when someone with new ideas is required
•limits chance of jealousy with promotion
•good when there is a skills gap within the organisation and no existing worker can take up the job
•good when more workers are needed than currently employed

•it helps the business ensure all applicants supply the type of information it requires to make esag comparisons

•the applicant writes personal details such as qualifications and their address. It may also include a section on ambitions
