What is training?
The action of teaching an employee a skill or behaviour type
What is on the job training?
•mentoring while doing the job
•assistance and advice is provided by those more experienced
What are advantages of on the job training?
•trainees can see how the skills relate to the job more easily and can put them into use immediately
•can give specific training needed for the job
•saves costs of travel to a course
What are disadvantages of on the job training?
•takes time away from the more experienced employee doing the training meaning they cannot be as productive
•expensive mistakes to the business can be made e.g. safety hazard which can ruin reputation
What is off the job training?
*training that occurs away from the job
*it could still be in the place of work or elsewhere like a training centre e.g lectures or online courses
What are the advantages of off the job training?
•training is often given by specialists who may offer higher quality training
•a worker may feel valued the business is paying for their training
•less stressful than on the job
What are the disadvantages of off the job training?
•employees may feel to see the links between the skills they’ve been taught and the workplace
•employees are taken away from workplace so productivity for that day will be less
•more expensive
What is staff development?
•teaches skills and knowledge that will be beneficial in the future and is about improving the potential of the employee
•training is short term this is long term
What are the advantages of staff development?
•can help meet future staffing needs and help overcome skill gaps e.g workers with improved skill could be future manager
•develops long term potential of employee which can lead to improved efficiency and productivity
•improves retention as workers appreciate the business investing in them
What are the disadvantages of staff development?
•increased costs for the business
•staff who have completed their training may find they can get a job elsewhere
What are apprenticeships?
•a form of staff development usually one or 2 years
•usually means the trainee is partially on the job and partially at college
•can result in receiving a vocation
What are advantages of apprenticeships?
•government may help fund for training of the apprentices
• staff may feel valued the business invests in them leading to more motivation
What are the disadvantages of apprenticeships?
•apprentices cannot be productive when offside (reduced output when offisite)
•costs to fund
