3.5 Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous tissue made out of?
Nervous tissue is made entirely of specialized cells called neurons.
What is the neuron’s job?
A neuron’s job is to send and receive messages.
Where do neurons receive messages from?
receives messages from small branches of the cell called dendrites.
How are the incoming messages passed?
The incoming messages are passed from the dendrites through the cell body to the axon.
What is the axon?
The axon is a long extension of the cell that ends in small branches. It carries impulses away from the cell body to its branches.
Peripheral Nervous System
Is made up of the cranial (head) and spinal nerves.
Sensory Neurons
Carry information from the body to the central nervous system
Motor Neurons
Carry information from the central nervous system to the muscles or organs.
Somatic Nervous System
These voluntary responses are controlled by the somatic nervous system
Automatic Nervous System
These automatic responses are controlled by the autonomic nervous system
autonomic nervous system
These automatic responses are controlled by the autonomic nervous system
What does the brain recieve?
The brain receives stimuli from the outside world, gathered by the sense organs: the eyes, ears, mouth, nose, and skin
What else does the brain receive?
The brain also receives internal stimuli from the body itself. It reacts to these stimuli and sends messages to the appropriate body parts
What 3 sections is the brain divided into?
The cerebrum, the cerebellum, and the medulla.
What are interneurons?
It contains a type of neuron called an interneuron. These neurons connect one neuron to another.
