3.4 Excretory System Flashcards
What does the Excretory system remove?
The body produces a number of different types of waste. These wastes are poisonous, and, if not removed from the body, can cause you serious harm.
What is the job of Excertion?
The job of waste removal, and excretion, is done by the excretory system.
What happens when cells break down proteins?
When cells break down proteins, they produce a very toxic compound called ammonia
When do chemical processes happen?
Chemical processes that happen in the cells also produce water and salts as waste products.
How does the liver play a role in the Excretory system?
It takes the highly toxic ammonia produced by the body’s cells out of the bloodstream and converts it into a less harmful substance called urea
How long are kidneys?
The kidneys are about 10 cm long.
What are the main organs of excretion?
They act as filters to the blood, straining out the unwanted area, water, and other salts, and they produce urine
What happens with every drop of blood?
Every drop of your blood is filtered about 300 times a day by the kidneys.
How much water do you produce a day?
You produce only about 1.5 L of urine.
How many nephrons does the kidney have?
The kidney has millions of nephrons
What does the ureters connect to?
Ureters are long tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder.
What tissue is the bladder covered with
The bladder is a sac covered in muscle tissue.
What happens as the urine enters the bladder?
As the urine enters the bladder, the bladder expands.
How much urine does the bladder store?
The bladder can store about 1 L of urine.
What happens when the bladder is full?
The bladder muscles contract and push the urine out through the urethra
