3.4.4 - Acid + Base Reaction Flashcards
Acid + base equation :
Acid + base ➡️ 🧂 salt + water 💧
What are the important observations made in an acid + base reaction !?
. The base disappears
(because it is used up in the reaction)
How do you make salt crystals?
. We can use an acid + base reaction
Step one (Making salt crystals):
. Add excess base to hot acid
( makes the salt solution quickly and ensures all the acid is used up)
Step two (making salt crystals):
. Filter out the excess base
(The salt solution is the filtrate and is collected in an evaporating basin)
Step three (making salt crystals) :
. Heat the salt solution until crystals start to form around the edges.
(this saturates the solution so that the crystals form most efficiently)
Step four (making salt crystals) :
Leave the salt solution to crystallise.
(evaporation of water allows crystals to form)
