3.4.3 - Acids, Bases And Alkalis Flashcards
What is an H+ donor (when it reacts with water)?
. An acid
What is an H+ acceptor (when it reacts with water)?
. A base
What is an OH- donor (when it reacts with water) ?
. An alkali
If a solution is acidic what is it’s pH!?
. pH < 7
If a solution is alkaline what is it’s pH !?
. pH > 7
Are Bases ACIDIC or ALKALINE !?
. The OH- ions the bases donate cause the pH >7 so the solution is labelled alkaline
What are the 5 common acids !?
. Hydrochloric acid
. Nitric acid
. Sulphuric acid
. Phosphoric acid
. Carbonic acid
What is the formula for hydrochloric acid !?
. HCl
What is the formula for nitric acid !?
. HNO3
What is the formula for sulphuric acid !?
. H2SO4
What is the formula for phosphoric acid !?
. H3PO4
What is the formula for carbonic acid !?
. H2CO3
What are the common alkalis!?
. Sodium hydroxide
. Potassium hydroxide
. Ammonium hydroxide
. (all soluble metal hydroxides)
What is the formula for sodium hydroxide !?
. NaOH
What is the formula for potassium hydroxide !?
. KOH
